Cold Sores
Cold Sores are the result of the herpes simplex virus. The virus
is typically acquired during childhood, much like chicken pox or
measles. The onset begins with a tingling or itching feeling on
the lips. Tiny blisters will form, break and ooze. The liquid which
oozes from the sore is highly contagious. Caution should be exercised
so as not to spread the condition to others through shared utensils
or other contact.
Once the sore has opened, a scab will then form and the sore will
heal within two weeks.
Several conditions may lead to an outbreak, including stress, reduced
immunity to disease and exposure to sunlight.
There is no cure for the virus, but there are medications which
can help speed up the healing cycle. Patients may also use aspirin,
acetaminophen, or ibuprofen for pain. Children should not be given
aspirin; however.
