Why Teeth Need Crowns
Dental crowns can be used by a dentist to correct a variety of
dental problems but primarily they are used to improve the appearance
of the tooth or to strengthen it to withstand daily wear and tear.
Dental crowns are cemented over the existing tooth which has been
prepared to accept the artificial appliance. They can be used to
repair damaged or decayed teeth or restore them to their original
shape.
Dental crowns may not always be the best choice, especially if
the procedure is only needed to correct the cosmetic appearance.
Crowns require that the existing tooth be ground down to accept
the crown. If a tooth is healthy, other procedures may be considered
which do not require the loss of so much of the existing tooth.
Caps or fillings may be an acceptable means to accomplish the cosmetic
goal.
Crowns are best utilized to strengthen the existing tooth.
